Lake Superior Ice Fishing

Ice Fishing on Lake Superior

I never thought I'd say it but February is a great time of year to go vacation in Thunder Bay. That may be crazy talk for those who have flights booked south to get out of Ontario's coldest month. They obviously haven't discovered ice fishing on Lake Superior.

Minus 30 degree weather is not an issue with a warm hut, a few friends and non-stop ice fishing action. Where else can you go to limit-out on Lake trout, white fish and pike in less than three hours and less than three kilometers off shore? No kidding! Ice fishing opportunities within a 30-minute drive around Thunder Bay are almost always guaranteed to be that good.

My first ice fishing opportunity on Lake Superior happened thanks to an invitation from Thunder Bay friends. Following a short business trip to Thunder Bay, they insisted I join them for a morning before I boarded my flight back to Toronto. Two hours is all it took to hook into dozens of fish, and a decision to return every winter for more. Wow, I though, look what I've been missing all these winters.

An ice-fishing trip to Thunder Bay is a great, affordable escape from the winter blues in other parts of Canada that could only dream of fishing this good. Airfare to Thunder Bay from major Canadian cities is quite reasonable and the off-season is a chance to get more out of that collection of air miles.
