Boating North of the 49th Parallel

 teenager fishing - rs

The port of Nipigon is the most Northerly freshwater port in North America.  As such, Nipigon marina is a "must-stop" for all boats cruising the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Nipigon is the only port North of the 49th parallel making it a community attraction.   Boaters can get their own ‘official certificate’ for visiting the Port of Nipigon that states ‘I crossed the line at 49, officially signed by the Town of Nipigon, the Port Captain and the Nipigon Town Mayor.

The town of Nipigon and its surrounding area also offers great recreational opportunities for visitors. While travelling up the deep channel to Nipigon, pictographs can be seen on the eastern shore across from Sawmill Point. These pictographs were painted between 400-1000 years ago and the origin and meaning still remain a mystery.
Nipigon hosts several festivals and events throughout the summer months including the Lake Helen Pow Wow, the Blueberry Blast and the Nipigon Fall Fish Festival.
If you take a walk through the town of Nipigon, you can view the artwork of murals that  grace the downtown streets. For and educational experience, interactive stations allowing visitors to experience and learn the history of the Nipigon region can be enjoyed at the Nipigon Historical Museum.
For those boaters that enjoy fishing, Nipigon River is a haven for anglers and is world famous for its feisty brook trout. The World Record brook trout, a whopping 14.5 lbs was caught in Nipigon River. You can expect to catch Brookies in the 5 to 10 pound range!
While visiting Nipigon, you may want to take a hike. The Nipigon Recreational Trail is 8.2 km with abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery.  Sections of the trail from the Nipigon Marina to Stillwater Creek and from the Red Rock Marina to Lloyd's Lookout provide a pleasant walk. Between Sawmill Point and Lloyd's Lookout, the trail becomes quite challenging with a series of steep inclines, but the effort is rewarding. The panoramic view of Nipigon Bay from the lookout at Eagle Ridge is absolutely stunning. You should allow approximately 3.5 hours to hike the complete trail.
